UrbanRiver Visions 2 is an initiative of Massachusetts’ Executive Office of Environmental Affairs (EOEA). First launched in 2002 with seven communities participating, the UrbanRiver Visions program helps communities across Massachusetts to capitalize on the potential of underutilized riverfront sites in or near town and city centers.

Through open planning workshops called “charrettes,” people with diverse interests come together within each community to craft vision and action plans to enhance their riverfronts. Goals include improving water quality, restoring habitats, developing recreation opportunities, strengthening connections to the river, promoting economic development, and offering a truly inclusive process that draws together as many of a community’s voices as possible.

The 2002 charrettes have sparked renewed interest in participating communities’ rivers, and in many cases, public and private investment has followed. This second round of charrettes is designed to foster similar momentum in six communities seeking to restore, revitalize or reconnect with their rivers.
