HAVERHILLHaverhill’s UrbanRiver Visions 2 site, along the Little and Merrimack rivers, includes parts of both the downtown and the nearby Bradford neighborhood. The area is underserved by parks and is home to many underutilized industrial properties that abut the rivers but “turn their backs” to the waterfront. Opportunities include revitalizing the riverfront, enhancing recreation opportunities, and improving connections to the city’s rivers. Plans for a river walk are already underway. The Haverhill charrette was held on Saturday, March 31 at the Pentucket Bank Community Room. Fifty area residents with a broad range of ideas and concerns came together for this daylong event. Participants worked in small groups, assisted by urban designers and facilitators, to create vision plans for key stretches of the Merrimack and Little riverfronts. The visions proposed activities and enhancements in and along the water as well as in adjoining business and residential areas. Ideas included expanding opportunities for residents and visitors to get out on the river, walk along the river, and enjoy dining, shopping and living in the area. The vision plans built on previous efforts by identifying short- and mid-term steps toward achieving the community's long-term goals for its riverfronts. Notes and drawings from the charrette are recorded in the Summary Report. A unified vision plan integrating the work of each group will be presented in a public meeting on Thursday, May 17 at the Pentucket Bank Community Room (35 Merrimack Street). An open house will begin at 7pm and a brief presentation will follow at 8pm. The Haverhill Vision Plan is available for download here.
